Women’s Health in Emergency Medicine (WHEM) Fellowship
Northwell Health | Department of Emergency Medicine

This two-year fellowship is based in the Division of Women’s Health within the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northwell Health. Fellows will help advance a national movement to improve gender equity in acute care. The program is designed to develop expertise in clinical research, advocacy, and systems-based innovation while providing advanced clinical training in gender-specific emergency care.

Fellowship Highlights​
​
  • Clinical Commitment: Maximum of 24 clinical hours per week, preserving protected time for academic work, advocacy, and research.

  • Advanced Training: Formal instruction in clinical research methods, public health, and procedural reproductive health interventions.

  • Advocacy Mentorship: Access to local and national leaders in women’s health advocacy and policy.

  • MPH Degree: Completion of a Master of Public Health (MPH) through Hofstra University over two years.

  • Diverse Experience: Fellows engage in gender-focused clinical care, education, and system redesign, gaining the knowledge and skills to deliver comprehensive, gender-specific care in emergency medicine.

Clinical and Academic Environment

​

Northwell Health’s Department of Emergency Medicine includes 17 emergency departments and serves a broad, diverse patient population across Long Island and New York City. Fellows work within a thriving academic department with multiple EM subspecialties and a robust commitment to equity, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Fellows benefit from individualized faculty mentorship and work closely with key institutional partners, including:

  • The Katz Institute for Women’s Health

  • Long Island Jewish Medical Center

  • North Shore University Hospital

  • Access Bridge, and departments including OB/GYN, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine

​

Fellows are actively involved in clinical operations and systems development initiatives that address real-world disparities in emergency care. Projects may include work in care coordination, triage equity, reproductive health access, and bias-aware clinical pathway design.

Application Information
​

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed residency training at an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine program and have a demonstrated interest in women’s health in EM.

​

Application Timeline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with preference given to those received by January 1, 2026.
